Victron Isolation Transformers
Isolation transformers prevent electrolytic corrosion and above all serve as a device to guarantee a safe electric system. When a boat is connected to shore-power the ground cable that is essential for protection of human life will lead to galvanic corrosion of any metal parts of the boat exposed to water, particularly sea-water. By fitting an isolation transformer into the shore power feed, the electrical continuity between the shore power and the boat is interrupted. The shore power is connected to the primary windings of the transformer and the boat to the secondary. The boat is completely isolated from the shore ground. By connecting all metal parts in the boat to to the neutral output on the secondary side of the transformer, an earth leakage breaker or fuse will blow in the event of a short circuit. Human safety is thus protected whilst the boat is not subjected to galvanic corrosion. When the boat is taken out of the water, the secondary neutral of the transformer should be connected to ground whilst wirk is done on the boat. Toroidal wound transformer technology ensures quietness and high efficiency. Soft start circuitry will ensure that the shore circuit breaker will not trip due to high inrush currents when plugged in. Indispensable in professional marine energy systems. The transformers rated 230V are pure isolation transformers. The transformers rated 115/230V can be used as pure isolation transformers at either voltage or as step-up or step-down isolation transformers. Note that the frequency will not be changed! |
